What do we teach?
Noor Ul Islam pre-school implements the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS). This is a statutory document that all settings who provide care and education to 0-5 year olds have to follow. The EYFS curriculum covers the following 6 areas:
• Communication, Language & Literacy,
• Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy,
• Personal, Social & Emotional Development,
• Creative Development,
• Physical Development and
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
We provide an Islamic environment and promote an Islamic Ethos, but take care to teach Islam as a way of life rather than a separate subject.
How we teach
Noor Ul Islam Pre-School believes in and follows the ‘Learning Through Play’ approach to Early Years teaching. This is a method advocated by Islam and modern day research. Play is important because it is a natural process which motivates children; it offers the child the chance to be in control within relevant and meaningful experiences. Through play children are challenged intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and linguistically.
When playing children are able to meet their own needs and make sense of their world as it involves exploring feelings, ideas, materials, relationships and roles, making connections and representing ideas, objects and environments. In play adults see children at their most competent – they also see children’s ideas, concerns, interests etc. This enables the key workers to effectively plan for each individual child. Children are never forced, pressurised, compared against others or made to feel inferior / inadequate when being introduced to new experiences.
Staffing
Noor Ul Islam pre-school is dedicated to ensuring there is a high ratio of adults to children in the setting. As well as the employed staff we have various students and volunteers. Generally we aim to provide a ratio of 1 adult to 6 children. This helps us to:
- provide support for children to become independent in selecting activities of their choice.
- help children experience and benefit from the activities we provide
- allow the children to explore and be adventurous.
We work on a “key worker” system. This means that when a child first starts pre-school he/she is allocated a member of staff who will work towards forming a bond with the child and will comfort and reassure the child and plan their transition to the pre-school with the parents. The key worker will work with the child’s parents to make sure that what the pre-school provides is right for the child’s particular needs and interests. The key worker will also carry out regular assessments of the child and help to develop each child’s individual potential.
We employ staff who are qualified with relevant childcare qualifications, and have adequate experience working with children. We invest in training our staff by assisting them in furthering their qualifications and by sending them on regular professional development courses on all issues related to childcare and education, safeguarding and health and safety.
Our Routine
Noor Ul Islam pre-school believes that care and education are equally important in the experience which we offer children. The routines and activities that make up the pre-school’s session are provided in ways that:
• help each child to feel that she/he is a valued member of the pre-school;
• ensure the safety of each child;
• help children to gain from the social experience of being part of a group; and
• provide children with opportunities to learn and help them to value learning.
Children need consistency in their routine so they know what to expect when they come in to pre-school and to reduce any anxieties. The pre-school provides children with a consistent routine, and discusses any differences we may make to the layout or the session prior to making them.
When can you apply?
Parents can apply for their child to be placed on our waiting list once their child reaches the age of 2½. Our waiting list is very long and we ask parents to be patient whilst waiting for a place for their child. Application forms can be picked up from the pre-school, or printed off this website, and must be returned to the pre-school when your child is 2 ½ years of age or over.
